R&B Films released The Ultimate DVD - Home Theater Fine Tuning Made Simple, a TV calibration disc, several years ago. While it’s slightly dated, it certainly has the tools needed to properly calibrate the video and audio of your standard definition television (SDTV). However, we’ve seen even more calibration tools on similar discs; it lands in 8th place on our list.

This is a pretty easy-to-use TV calibration disc, though it's a little light on the video and audio tools. The graphics, demos and voiceover narration help instruct users on calibrating their SDTVs.

The Ultimate DVD - Home Theater Fine Tuning Made Simple disc has a variety of video calibration tools available, but as we said above, there are fewer tools here compared to similar TV calibration DVDs.

There are six different sections of video calibration tools, including Contrast, Brightness, Color, Geometry (to ensure shapes look normal on-screen), Clamp and Sharpness. Each section has video test patterns and specialized tests to help calibrate and check your SDTV.

The Clamp test will scan your television’s proficiency at properly showing black levels. Since this is only a test, it won’t help you calibrate your black levels. From there, you can adjust the levels until the picture looks good to your eye and passes the Clamp test.

Audio calibration tools include a handful of actual tools and some tests. These include ways to adjust the levels of your subwoofer and speakers on a 5.1 surround sound system. The tests can also check how well your multi-channel system is performing. While the available audio tools are useful, we would have liked to have seen more tools on this DVD.

The Ultimate DVD - Home Theater Fine Tuning Made Simple disc’s menu includes several sections. One area deals with screen formats, such as 4 x 3 fullscreen, 16 x 9 widescreen, etc. There's also a multi-angle test, with a test car crashing, to check this specific DVD feature. A multi-lingual feature calibrates using different languages other than English. And a section dedicated to audio options presents sound samples in Dolby Digital Surround and DTS 5.1.

The Ultimate DVD - Home Theater Fine Tuning Made Simple TV calibration disc is presented in standard definition, and it is perfect for SDTVs that display in both 4 x 3 fullscreen and 16 x 9 widescreen. Because of the substantial differences between SDTV and HDTV, we don't recommend using this disc if you have an HDTV. A calibration disc specifically designed for HDTV on Blu-ray will be more useful for HDTV owners.

There are voiceover instructions, along with graphics and demos, to help you better understand how The Ultimate DVD - Home Theater Fine Tuning Made Simple TV calibration disc works. If the DVD itself doesn’t work, you can likely get it replaced from the place where you purchased it. But since the disc is outdated, you may want to be careful – there might not be any other discs available to replace a faulty one with.
